What is a full systems diagnostic test?
Full systems diagnostic tests date back a very long time, but the original tests were performed by humans not by computers as the technology was not advanced enough to do so. Most software now comes with a built-in diagnostics program which was a great development, these programs can range in complexity, some are very simple but for more complex things the complexity of the diagnostic program also has to be more advanced. These programs will be operating in things that you use every day without you being aware that they’re there. One example of a diagnostic provision is in your microwave, if there is a shorted temperature probe the provisions will find this error and your microwave screen will flash up with a code ‘F6’ to make you aware of this. Other things that have diagnostic provisions include garage doors, electronic products, and games.
How to run a full systems diagnostic test?
Many people run into problems with their computers in relation to their RAM, the best way to check if it’s functioning correctly is to run a full systems diagnostic test. There are a few options on how to do this. The first option is to run the windows memory diagnostic, there are two ways to launch this: either by opening the start menu and searching for it or by using the shortcut Windows Key + R and then type mdsched.exe. Your computer will shut down whilst the test is running so make sure you save anything you have open before you run the test. This test will usually only take several minutes and there will be a progress bar to show you how close the test is to being finished. Once the test is complete your computer will reboot and once you login the results of the test will appear.
The other option is to run a test called the MemTest86. This test has to be downloaded it is not pre-installed on your computer but it is free to use. If the windows test cannot identify any errors then this test is a much more powerful tool to test your computer. It tests for many more things than the windows test does, there is a version that you can pay for that tests even more functions but if you want to save your money then the free-to-use test should perform all the functions you need. This program will continuously run tests until you end it which allows you to observe much more about your computer’s functions and pick up on more errors. If any errors are identified then they will automatically come up on your computer screen, to leave this program simply use the escape key.
What do the results of a memory test mean?
If any errors are found whilst running a memory test then this simply means that there is an issue with your RAM. The RAM inside your computer is made up of several sticks, most errors mean that one of these sticks has become damaged or has suffered a fault and needs replacing. Whilst this is most likely this is not always the case, it could also mean that your RAM is not compatible with the rest of the motherboard within your computer or that it is struggling to run at the speed at which you’re using it. You can make changes to whichever of these things you think apply and simply run the test again.
